あやかしびと – Thoughts

Well that was a pretty entertaining ride.

First of all, I understand that there was some emphasis on Soushichi and his yearning for a normal life but I feel a bit like the slice of life dragged on a bit too long on certain routes. Let me say this first, by no means was the slice of life bad. It was more entertaining than anything else but you see, I came in with the impression that there would be a considerable amount of fighting. However in reality in most routes, battles more or less served as a “final problem to overcome” that pops up to tie the story up and end it. Before that happens however, at one point I nearly forgot that I was meant to be reading the story for the action.

The general story flow was along the lines of common route -> romance, beautiful school life, drama -> suddenly the antagonists arrive and cause chaos. At that point, depending on the route, strong characters who would otherwise settle the incident in minutes decide to ever so conveniently leave the town. So after you reach the end where our wonderful main characters get past the crisis, you realize that in hindsight things would’ve been a hundred times smoother if they didn’t get conveniently thrown out of the plot. So the plot tended to be a little too convenient up until the final route but I’ll admit that the finale was somewhat ruined for me because as I was reading through the final parts of it, something suddenly came up and I had to leave for an hour or so. Sort of ruined the buildup after I came back so in a certain sense you can say it dampened my experience of the story.

But yeah, due to things like that I can’t say the story was perfect. Despite the flaws, I would say it’s worth a read because the slice of life was by no means boring and the build up was worth it as it answered all of the main questions raised. It’s probably mainly recommendable if you don’t mind the outdated art/system and also don’t mind the NTR/rape thrown in there.

On the company side though, I always thought Propeller was the kind of company which seemingly added hscenes for the sake of the plot or just to make it into an eroge because in their later games, I always felt the scenes were out of place and sudden at times. Could have probably been ditched entirely and the story would progress just fine. It wasn’t until I read this and Bullet Butlers that I knew that in the past they did rape and such. Finding out that was interesting an interesting tidbit as it shows how overtime, Propeller got more and more tame with hscenes to the point of the next upcoming game by Propeller being all ages.

Anyway it was time well spent, there’s still a bit under 2 weeks until the releases of this month so I think I’ll be starting 戦極姫3 by Gesen 18. Famous or should I say infamous for its high quality artwork during the earlier games, it seems to have improved considerably since then so I decided to give it a try. Hoping for some decent gameplay and not as much quality art.

  1. Amazing, a something absolutely suddenly came up and you had to leave for an hour while left game on auto-play. Seriously, just amazing.
Oh and speaking about Propeller from past to nowadays, it reminded me Illusion which tries to do some steps to not-just-hgame with a plot, which is pretty ridiculous.

    • No, I was referring to the atmosphere and tension built up along the way being ruined because I had to leave practically just before the big finale. Then I came back and played it for 10 minutes and finished it, how’s that for a finale?
