追奏のオーグメント – Impressions

I actually forgot this was going to be released but hahaha, though the summary sounded pretty dark the story was pretty comedic.

Now if only Augment didn’t look like that it would be a perfectly fine lighthearted VN.

… But she(?) looks like that so it can’t be helped. There’s also the matter that it doesn’t change the fact that the premise isn’t particularly lighthearted so who knows what sort of twists and turns it’s going to take. In short, I’m cautiously advancing while enjoying it in my own way.

So our protagonist is… 80 years old. Great. Next he commits suicide because he lived an unsatisfactory life. Well those feelings can be related to, lived an unsatisfactory life with none of your dreams achieved and then at that age, you’re bed ridden only waiting for your death. How unfortunate that even if you get past diseases and the like you’ll be met with that in the end but ahem, returning to the subject…

Upon committing suicide he wishes how he could return to his high school days. At which he hears the voice of a young girl saying that she would grant the wish for him.

Thus he wakes up 60 years back in his 20 year old self. Everything is perfectly 20 years old, he no longer has problems standing up and generally he’s perfectly lively again! Though his speech isn’t quite adjusted.

Confused by the situation for time being, he returns to the place his house (at that age) was at. He entered to find his elder sister and parents alive and well. Well touching reunion(?) aside, he enters his room to find a terrible monster straight out of a horror movie in front of him.

Yes, it’s that young girl(?) who granted his wish! She(?) is a shinigami here to reap his life. Well for time being the gender is ambiguous because… it looks like that but the voice sounds like a young girl so we’ll leave it as a girl for now.

After managing to settle down, our protagonist Hideya talks to the shinigami who is called Augment. The explanation goes like this:

She is a shinigami, shinigami’s are basically beings who have defiled souls. In order to clean their defiled souls, they need to take the souls of living things which have freshly died. Unfortunately you can’t just go smash an ant hill and reap many souls. Insects, dogs and the like have very little souls and thus does little to help her. Humans in comparison have very large souls therefore they make a better target. However if the living being died of an accident, committed suicide or anything of that sort, their soul becomes defiled and as a result of that, it’s less useful for the shinigami. On the other hand, if the soul is very happy on the moment of dying, the soul will be very pure. So basically if the human dies a happy death they’ll get bonus points.

That’s why she’ll grant Hideya’s wish of returning to his past and dispelling his regrets of things he couldn’t do before dying. So that once he becomes happy he can kindly… die.

Worry not however, it’s not as if you’re making a contract with a devil, there’s no particular loss in getting reaped by a shinigami so it’s a pretty much win-win situation. The shinigami gets something out of it and the human gets a happy death, why the hell not? Unless there’s a catch somewhere…

That’s her objective explained, after that there’s various tidbits like how because she possessed him, part of her power is given to Hideya. In this case, it’s time travel, so by stabbing himself in the neck to commit suicide again, he’ll return back in time. You may ask why he needs to do something so grotesque, the reason is simply that it’s the last action he did. Poor him. Besides that, she can’t possess others until Hideya dies, she can’t voluntarily stop possession either until Hideya dies, she can kill Hideya at any time but she obviously won’t until he’s happy, well there’s various rules but for time being that’s sufficient for explanations.

Now when speaking of regrets I’m sure a few things easily come to mind, when linking those things to VNs the picture easily comes to view. Indeed, it’s LOVE!

As such, Hideya’s love comedy school life began at 80 years old with a shinigami to advise him and help him out to some extent if she can. Generally she floats around Hideya talking to him, the usual rules of others being incapable of seeing the shinigami (unless they’re near death) applies so Hideya often gets misunderstood as a strange person at some points of the story. While Hideya is at school and whatnot, the shinigami wanders off and reaps souls of insects and well… generally wasting time somewhere else.

Man looking at it again, this setting is pretty surreal. Though calling a VN that is questionable as well.

For the better or worse though, they didn’t really make use of the fact that Hideya is 80 years old much as he doesn’t act all that much older despite essentially dealing with people who are at the age of being his grand children. On that note, is that even fine? Though he’s physically 20, mentally he should still be 80. In that sense he’s a 80 year old who is having a love comedy with people 60~ years old younger than him…

Let’s drop this line of thought.

Anyway, though death is still looming on him, it’s a generally light hearted story. The comedy is pretty well done though I’m sure tastes vary for this, especially much since it’s comedy. At least I found the comedy funny but in any case, it’s unlikely that they won’t make use of the setting along with blatant signs of fun happening, it’s easily imaginable that towards the end of the routes there’s going to be some amusement to be had. Hopefully we’ll see a happy end, hopefully.

On separate notes, this company is called jirai(landmine) soft. Is it fine calling yourself a landmine? Really? At least this story isn’t much of a landmine yet.

Finally, the fact that the shinigami is strangely pleasant is… an odd feeling, I’m not sure how to respond. I mean, it sounds like a perfectly young girl you know? she also doesn’t give off a “bow before me, mortals” feeling either, if you listened to voices alone it would just be some sort of cute shinigami who plays around and wastes time as Hideya tries to achieve a happy end with the heroines so she can reap his soul.

But physically it looks like that. No matter how cute she sounds, it looks like that. With the appearance of something straight out of a horror, how… how am I supposed to respond?

What are you doing to me Japan….
