流星のアーカディア – Thoughts

Why is it I wonder that whenever I play a Dandelion game I wander off doing other things distracting me from actually finishing it. At the very least this time around I actually did get around to finishing it. Not that it really counts as much since well, this is probably one of the most rushed VNs I’ve played.

I’m pretty sure that in certain routes it took me no more than an hour to finish from start to end, far from having any build up it felt like the story ended before it even began. To make things worse? it’s an early branching story. There wasn’t much of a common route to speak of and the individual routes themselves were also something you could finish in a lunch break. It goes without saying that it would be difficult for any writer to try and make you feel there was some sort of build up when the story is of that length.

To roughly outline things… Our protagonist is introduced as a womanizer making plenty of women cry in his past. Once that is established, it apparently means that we can have the heroines easily fall for him because well, character settings. Once they fall for him, the story can proceed to build up to the problem each heroine holds. Their past, their identity, their goals. While it’s a pretty typical setup, the issue is the length as mentioned. There’s something called build up in stories. What I got instead of build up was basically the heroines falling for the protagonist left and right, following that the problem in question gets thrown at my face. After it’s thrown at my face, they immediately go ahead and solve the problem without much long winded talk.

It usually involves the protagonist going and knocking on the front door of the antagonists house.

To make things more fun, every other ending had things rounded up with the power of friendship and last minute tie up for the other characters in the story. The sort of stuff you usually try to do at the end of a “true route” or grand route for the story was being done with hardly any build up at all.

I honestly have no idea where they were trying to go with that.

With the case closed they credit roll and skip to a brief epilogue showing what they were doing after, the end.

It’s hard to say much about it in the end seeing as it barely took any time to finish but well, we can just say it was bad and leave it at that, yes.

Next up is 恋色マリアージュ but that will be some time after as I’m still relatively busy.
