黄雷のガクトゥーン – Thoughts

Hell yes, a work in the series where Liar soft properly delivers.

To clear up any possible misunderstandings, no it’s not that the previous parts were unsatisfactory. It’s just that in various occasions, when looking at the romance, they tailor up extremely likable heroines and protagonists and… actually forget it, they tend to make a great cast of characters in general. However they doesn’t really always completely tie up the relationship between the male and female leads, at least not in the same manner as the typical eroge with a confession, one or more hscenes scattered about, a problem, they overcome it and (presumably) happily ever after.

Over here the relationship has a tendency to be more subtle or rather, there’s a straaaaangely high ratio of male protagonists with a cold or at the very least not so expressive personality. The result of this you ask? It seems it’d take the world ending several times over before you’d see a proper confession out of them. With that said, when you look at their characters, it seems out of character even if it did happen so it’s not too surprising. Point being, it’s the perfect archetype to leave things awfully vague in the end.

Namely, I’m looking at you Sharnoth. The story was good, the story was good but… WHAT ABOUT MY ROMANCE END?! IN THE END WHAT WAS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MARY AND M!?

… Yes, embarrassingly, it’s  more or less the sorrowful shouts of my inner fangirl. Typically I can throw it aside but when it comes to a cast of characters like this it just becomes hard to ignore. To be fair, in every other part of it you can, in a perhaps wishful point of view, at least see it as already implied and therefore fine but it’s another thing entirely to see it canonically happen. And on another point, it’s not really as bad as I make it sound like. Most of the stories end just fine and to begin with it’s the sort of story where it’d probably be fine even if it dropped romance between the main characters entirely. As such, complaining about it seems questionable but it’s probably just one of the more memorable problems I had with the series since all of them are otherwise enjoyable reads in every way.

Speaking of which, every other story of the series seems to scream of “I want to see the continuation” but when finishing a great story, who wouldn’t? I think it’s mainly because the tendency of the stories to end just as it sounds like the relationship between the main characters begins to get interesting, leaves much to be desired in that area.

Now that I’ve gotten my general impressions about the series aside— let’s talk about Gahkthun.

To be brief… this is, in my opinion, probably one of the best works in the series yet. The reason is because…

I like where this is going

That’s pretty much why I liked it more than the others. In any case with my inner fangirl satisfied, the story itself is pretty much as good as the rest of the series. To be honest it’s a little hard for me to make a comparison since, well, I generally played them with quite a while break in between so my memory of everything is pretty vague after all this time. In any case, it was extremely enjoyable and clearly is the best story of the month. The wait was worth it indeed.

Next up is… is…

I don’t think I actually scheduled anything beyond this, well I’ll come up with something tomorrow.
