マテリアルブレイブ イグニッション – Thoughts

Finished Kanae’s after story and I’m out of here.

Or to be more specific I’m putting it off until an indefinite day which could be anywhere from next week to the next year.

The battle system has definitely improved in some aspects, especially in that (at least when compared to the original) it’s much, much harder and actually does make things somewhat more challenging.

… On the other hand, I feel the grindy aspect of the game only took a step back. Whose idea was it to make randomized gear and skill stats along with drops? what is this supposed to be, a single player MMO?

It took me what felt like a month to grind through Kanae’s after story, partially because I was distracted by other things I suppose but when looking back it honestly feels like I was hardly doing any reading and was more grinding away on every dungeon. Not exactly a pleasant experience.

And then the ending which consisted of some shoehorned character development with nothing being permanently resolved. As a matter of fact, in the story, what the hell even happened to the antagonists? They appeared for that one scene to show that they’ve been revived from the dead for reasons I won’t bother probing into, yet they never appeared a single time after that. I guess the writer forgot about them somewhere along the road. Instead of going past those sub bosses, we jump right to the final boss which is apparently… a rock.

A parasite rock that has some sort of twisted goal of spreading its parasites onto all of humanity which effectively causes the end of humanity as we know it.

I… don’t know what to say. Half way in I was beginning to think that this was supposed to be some sort of zombie horror with all of their friends and companions (minus heroines) getting converted into enemies only to have the effect reversed by the power of love… or just Ayumu’s ever so convenient abilities serving as a perfect counter against everything they do.

In the end, this story perfectly pieces together with the original, it makes me think that they may have intended for this to be in the original game or they intended to split the game in two parts to begin with. Regardless of what the truth is, when going into the heroine after stories I was expecting something more along the lines of more heroine focus, after all they were thrown aside for Ena in the original. Instead what I more or less received was the same developments as the original but with some heroine scenes scattered about. I honestly believe they’re putting every single bit of effort in preventing the heroines from getting some proper screen time, even in their own after story.

From what I can see so far, this game is practically one huge Ena route with the rest of the heroines as some fodder bonus. Poor heroines, considering I don’t really even like Ena that much. The heroine “after stories” are really more like, their actual routes which were just about non-existent in the original. And as with every other game with a true route, anyone who isn’t the true heroine will receive some sort of half assed development only revealing some tidbits of the truth at best. This is exactly what’s happening here. I imagine when it comes to the final route we’ll see some more consistent storytelling but I don’t have the patience to grind through the game at the moment. And so, I’m throwing in the towel for now.

Moving on… I’ll probably try my hand at 夏の終わりのニルヴァーナ once I get some time. I feel like staying away from games for time being. There’s still the Corona FD however which was also pretty painful to play at times in the original so… This sucks. At least I have 大図書館の羊飼い to look forward in the end.

At least they made the art more consistent.

At least they made the art more consistent.

  1. may I ask for a quick walkthrough, you don’t have to make it complex, just write down which choices I need to take in a certain route
I can’t hook choices to the translator in this kind of VN
