Being a charage there’s not much plot to speak of but as a charage it did a wonderful job on establishing an array of colorful characters. Colorful enough to make me play nearly all routes, though I actually wanted to play every single one of them… Considering Pastel chime is out, maybe some other day, yes. (whenever I say that, I never get around to doing it really…)
Character-wise, while all of them are plenty fun in their own rights, I think Kana takes the cake at all points of the story. Ureshino comes very close but unfortunately she’s a sub heroine so she didn’t get as much screen time as she deserved. Following that is Kodachi who can probably be considered to be the “true” heroine.
However in my heart Kana will always be the true heroine!
Looking away from reality aside, while it’s an exceptionally good charage it did have its downsides. Most notably, it was a little disappointing that many of the big events they build up to end in an instant. And by instant, I mean an instant because as soon as the big day arrives we skip right to the ending result with the characters talking about how the event played out.
After all that build up, I would’ve liked to actually see how the event played out, not just hear the aftermath. On a similar note, in the case of Sakuraba route, it somewhat felt like the story ended half way in as her conflicts with her parents were never completely solved. The story basically ended on a “she changed for the better so everything will surely be alright from now! Likely. Probably. Hopefully.” note. Perhaps I’m simply used to stories actually rounding up everything cleanly before bringing things to an end.
The true route this time around felt a little strange. Rather than a completely separate route, it seems like an extension of the common route which… branches into individual (albeit short) routes again. It makes me question why they even bothered making a true route some extent. Though it does indeed reveal important information about the story so that’s that. Not to mention I got a separate Kana route which means all the better!
There is never enough Kana, never.
Overall it has been a wonderful charage with a good balance of everything, enough to allow me to not become bored throughout the story. Though I did become depressed at Senri route. The bastards made Kana cry. That was redeemed by the fact that it unlocked a 3P scene though. I truly wish there were more stories that manage to produce a cast of all around colorful characters like this. I also liked how there were various small effects that probably don’t take too much effort to make but nevertheless makes a great addition to the flow of the story.
Next up is Pastel Chime 3. While I’ve never touched the previous Pastels the gameplay this time around greatly interests me. Not to mention the heroines look pretty good this time around so I’m pretty hyped for it. I just pray that I don’t pull another Daiteikoku landmine again.
