向日葵の教会と長い夏休み – Thoughts

What a heart warming story ;_;

Contrary to my impressions of it just being a story with a comfortable atmosphere, it turned out to be great read. Stories of this genre are pretty rare in eroge format unless you count nukiges but that’s still pretty different.

First off there’s Yomi route.

Yomi entered a blatant fantasy region which doesn’t come as a surprise considering how many hints she was dropping around.

In her route, it’s revealed that Yomi is actually… a cat. It’s a little troublesome to go into the details but, the real Yomi is a girl who the protagonist Yousuke met in a sunflower field along with a black cat. They played every day until one day Yomi stopped coming. The black cat ended up taking the appearance of Yomi who could no longer come and played with Yousuke.

This is because the real Yomi turned out to be sickly and doesn’t have much more to live.

;_;

;_;

Miraculously she managed to last until a few years later where Yousuke had to move away to Tokyo, that’s when the real Yomi passed away.

Following that, the black cat returned to her cat form and stayed that way, lazily living for 8 years until Yousuke returned during his summer vacation in university.

That was when the black cat turned back into Yomi and the story began.

Though the summary is inadequate, it was definitely a good story. It’s enjoyable when they drop hints here and there which aren’t immediately obvious until they bring it together and point out all of the hints they had previously dropped. In the end given the choice between becoming a higher existence or giving up and becoming a human, she chose to become a human and live with Yousuke. The story overall felt like a well done true route. Except the story didn’t end here.

After finishing Yomi’s route you unlock Hina’s route.

10/10 daughter material

Hina is an orphan which the priest took in around the time Yousuke returned. Being a pure and innocent child, she indeed gave a cute daughter feel and was one of the main driving forces behind the common route.

Except well, we can’t quite forget that she was abandoned. But for what reason? Yousuke tried to find an answer and it wasn’t exactly the answer he was looking for.

It turns out that her mother is still alive. Who is the cruel mother who would abandon such a cute daughter you ask? Well… It ever so happens to be someone Yousuke is familiar with. namely Yousuke’s foster parents and more accurately his uncle couldn’t leave Yousuke who was living in the church alone and decided to take him in. That was the reason why Yousuke moved to Tokyo.

His uncle was a taciturn but gentle person while his aunt was very young and beautiful. Both of them treated him kindly and after hearing this information, he realizes that he has actually met Hina once when she was just born where his foster parents were extremely happy about her being born.

Unfortunately a bit before the beginning of the story, his uncle’s company was going through some rough times and because of the stress of trying to get it back in shape, his uncle ended up passing away and the company went bankrupt. He had no idea where his aunt ended up going to since he didn’t know how to contact her.

This of course comes as a shock to Yousuke since it would actually make Hina something along the lines of his cousin. Yousuke decides to go to Tokyo and ask a detective acquaintance of the priest to find the whereabouts of his aunt. A few days later he finds his aunt just as she was going to move out and well… let’s just say what was revealed to him wasn’t so pretty.

Because of that incident, Yousuke resolved himself to adopt Hina and… time passed.

More accurately, 10 years passed from that time.

The cute and innocent daughter is no more, though unsurprisingly she grew up to have a huge Electra complex anyway.

Hina’s past was more or less left untouched since then and Hina grew up well. Yousuke completely became a father (despite also being a wizard) and works at a nearby fishery after he graduated from university. Though after all that time, while they’re technically father and daughter, on paper they still have little to do with each other.

As for Yousuke’s aunt… her whereabouts since that day is unknown until one day a chance to find her appeared. After a 10 year wait, the full picture of why Hina got abandoned was revealed. To be honest after hearing it, you can’t exactly hate her for abandoning Hina considering how terrible her luck was. Even though I say that, I think half of the things are still her fault and she probably knows that.

Watching the relationship between the two was also pretty awkward considering how Yousuke was the one who raised her for most of her life yet somehow for some reason Yousuke was the one who initiated the change of relationship. Leca turning into a demon and strangling Yousuke perfectly described my feelings of “WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU DOING!?”. Especially when considering that it happened right at the time where they were about to be officially recognized as father and daughter by law. It was by the way, pretty neat to see all of the girls grown up after the 10 year time skip. You don’t really see that often in VNs.

Most of them are still single though hahahahahaha I wonder whose fault that is. By the way Tsukiko really pulled the short end of the stick. Not only does she not get a route, she ended up getting rejected multiple times throughout the story in favor for Hina.

Oh right, I forgot to mention. In Hina’s route Yomi appeared to have ended up choosing the former option. Instead of becoming human she chose to disappear from the memories of everyone and became a black cat named “Yomi”. Throughout the story she helps Yousuke and Hina behind the scenes as just a “smart” cat. YOMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII ;_;

Ahem, I don’t quite think I’ve properly transmitted the feeling of the story so let me briefly sum things up: It’s a good touching story of evenacatisfinetoo while at the same time also a touching story about raising your daughter to become your wife. It’s amusing that the jokes of Yousuke being a lolicon ended up becoming true in the end.

It’s extremely rare or rather, I’m pretty sure it’s the first time I’ve seen a story of this genre in VN format. There’s many stories that have a daughter-like heroine but that’s where it ends. They’re just daughter-like. In this case it gave more of a reality that she really might as well be the protagonists daughter. Just that they didn’t have that big of an age difference.

It was in any case a surprisingly good story from what I expected to be an average VN. Pretty damn satisfying alright, now let’s see what I should play next…
