魔導巧殻 ~闇の月女神は導国で詠う~ – Impressions

So far so great. I actually went in relatively cautiously when considering all of the bad talk about the gameplay but in reality it was…as bad as they described. Hahahaha well, it’s true that the controls in the battle tend to be a bit clunky.

Too bad she's an enemy ;_;

Too bad she’s an enemy ;_;

The reason I say this is mainly because in the battles at the start, everything is fairly simple. They don’t bother retreating, they just beeline towards you and get killed while you can make use of strategies like withdrawing to heal the unit and bringing them back later. The essence of the game is that: AS LONG AS YOU SUCCESSFULLY WITHDRAW YOU CAN FIGHT FOREVER! Therefore you withdraw whenever possible so that you can take them out later for round two.

Enemies at the start don’t do much as I said so it was pretty disappointing in that area. That was recovered as I actually began invading some nations. They properly withdrew when dangerous and used their special abilities as well. Fairly irritating. I almost had one of their commanders then he decided to special, killing the unit I had latched on him and successfully withdrew. All of my rage ;_;

Anyhow, gameplay-wise I’m pretty satisfied despite the problems pointed out by various people. My only qualm to speak of is how attached they are to destroying buildings. I mean god damn, did a building kill their mothers or something?

However the gameplay doesn’t end there. To be frank, when talking about the various features of the game (e.g. city construction) I feel that Eushully truly went all out. It looks as if they incorporated features from every other game into this game in one way or another. The only thing I haven’t really seen yet is synthesis.

Not only are your fodder units swappable, they come with weapons, stats and abilities, passives. Your units are also the same with their own abilities, weapons and the like. There also seems to be titles that will greatly change your stats/special ability for hero units. If all of that was not sufficient, then they also threw in an elemental system just because.

Then you have the Madou Koukaku who don’t just look like a bunch of living dolls (with visible joints and all), you also get to dress them up because… well it’s Eushully.

Following that there’s city building. I’m far from done dealing with it myself but from what I’ve seen so far, there’s stores you can purchase resources and equipment from with gold. Some units can also be purchased from buildings, magic research buildings and the like exist as well. Mainly for the aforementioned Madou Koukaku modifying. There’s a prostitute building where you can… wait do I even need to explain? It’s not for plain hscenes though as it has proper purpose… sort of.

There’s quests to take up if you need some gold. They’re pretty similar to achievements in a sense since some of them basically tell you to achieve this and achieve that. But there’s the occasional story quest and monster extermination quest mixed in there as well.

You also need to keep an eye out for region information. Regions have varying levels of resources, it would be a waste if you didn’t take advantage of plentiful places by building resource collectors in that area. It works pretty similar to the resource collection in Kamidori as far as I can see, just that you collect at the end of every turn.

With the gameplay done for now, we can now look at the story.

The story goes into full world building mode as it introduces you to various concepts belonging to their world. It shares the same setting as the Ikusa series so you’ll find various things the same here.

There’s a good few different factions all with their own conflicts and ambitions. Frankly all of them stand out as a character and are pretty interesting. I am, however, expecting that not all of the girls are going to get the attention they deserve by the end of the game. To begin with it would take far too much time to go through.

I’m honestly unsure route-wise at the moment. I would assume that all of the girls on the cover get a route but beyond that I wouldn’t really put much hope in it. Al has the best design HOWEVER THAT GOD DAMNED VOICE, THAT VOIIIIIIIIIIIIIICE. The voice ruins it all and it’s going to take time to get used to, if I get used to it ever. Her appearance makes you think of some cute, soft or at least emotionless voice but instead what you get is a strange sounding voice like an old hag in a sense. Therefore while there’s no fault in Al’s character design and character, the voice kills everything. This is the first time it has ever happened to me and it’s the biggest disappointment of the game.

All of the other women get relatively suitable voice actors and it could be just me but all of the male voice actors are great for their roles. It’s just Al who pulled the short end of the stick, and of all things Al appears to be pretty important to the story. Judging from the context and how prominent she is in the art, opening and the likes.

Well at least I have Ryun. MY HOPES AND DREAMS, THEY WERE NOT (completely) SHATTERED!

Thank you for existing Ryun. If it weren't for you... ;_;

Thank you for existing Ryun. If it weren’t for you… ;_;

Anyway, although I want to trust Eushully, I just don’t think they can handle all of the girls. I’m vaguely expecting them to only get one or two hscenes and at most they’ll become an “ally” of the protagonist and that’s it. That would still be good, at worst they’ll get ignored completely. Most attention will probably be put on the Madou Koukaku’s. Well that’s the title after all.

I am, however, vaguely interested in Warum telling me about invading being bad as it leads to Weiss (the protagonist) not treating the girls he captures very well. I wonder if this implies that there’s an evil route like with some other Eushully games. I would be quite interested in that, becoming a tyrannical king going around forcefully invading regions all around me. Being a hero of justice is fun and all but occasionally being a tyrannical invader is also fun.

Anyway as much as I’d like to keep talking about it, I want to like, go back to playing so let’s end the post here. If I have the energy to I’ll likely make more posts as I go along. In any case with how the game is like so far, don’t expect me to start another VN until next week at minimum.

To war!

  1. It resemble romance three kingdom 4x system (Explore, exploit, expand, exterminate). I got hard feeling when playing this kind game. Enemy’s Ai tend to flank your territory and lunch surprise attack when you muster your forces on other place.
    Is there any auto management system in game?
    Good graphic and review.
