My thoughts are more or less in line with what I thought during the impressions. First of all the characters were quite well done, though Otoha was frankly annoying half of the time but to some extent, she made it up with a certain scene so I shrugged it off.
… Well that didn’t motivate me to do her route still though. Never liked idol stories to begin with.
Hajime is a pretty rare protagonist to some extent. While there’s plenty of capable protagonists out there… okay, maybe not plenty but they exist if you search for them. Hajime is more or less the type to be a wolf hiding in sheep’s clothing. Not too unusual for a butler but it feels pretty rare for such a character to be the protagonist of the story.
With that said, Hajime is extremely loyal to Nanami and greatly cares for his little sister who he doesn’t have a blood connection with. Nanami herself is portrayed as someone who is smart, rich, beautiful, but missing a screw somewhere.
Contrary to her appearances however, she actually isn’t portrayed as smart for nothing as she often thinks a step ahead of our ever so capable protagonist. It was actually pretty amusing to see Hajime struggle so much for his supposedly oblivious master only to find that she knew about everything all along and had constructed a plan for things already.
As noted by themselves, in the common route their main failure was lack of communication. Things probably would’ve went smoother that way but it can’t be helped I guess.
Then there’s Shiaya who I briefly mentioned in the impressions but well, there’s also more than what meets the eye for her personality. I don’t think anyone would have thought that they’d turn that shy girl into a diehard fujoshi and masochist the moment you entered her route. It’s like, was the entire personality they built up during common route for the sake of this twist? And it probably really was.
Perhaps in exchange for a long, plot heavy common route it felt like some characters barely got enough time in the story and the individual routes with the exception of perhaps the idol route because it supposedly branches off the main story, are pretty short.
Nanami’s route was of course the most entertaining as it made the most sense in the timeline and had an interesting reveal by the end. Shiaya’s route more or less sidesteps the problems and presumably all of the other routes sidestep the issues as well. Truly makes Nanami’s route stand out from the rest. Though Shiaya’s twist was pretty traumatizing, it was still an entertaining route to read so that’s that.
Speaking of which I have to say, while the antagonist of the story comes off as a total bitch when you first meet her it’s pretty amazing that the writer managed to take that character and develop her to the point of being actually somewhat likable by the end of Nanami’s route.
Overall the writer does a good job putting together a story related with economics that was very interesting to read while at the same time having a cast of likable characters, they even managed to make the antagonist relatively likable by the end of it. I think part of Nanami’s charm was also because of the good job the voice actor did for her so that’s also another plus.
There really needs to be more stories like this but I suppose it can’t be helped that they’re fairly rare to see.
Next up I’m going to lightly skim over Akatsuki no Goei for the sake of Reminiscence as I hardly remember much to speak of. Reading EGS for Reminiscence it seems there’s a fair bit of references to it so it should be worth my time. There’s also the matter of there being a lot of things I’ve forgotten about the series by now.
Really though, looking again I seem to have a fair bit of things to read this month. It would be nice if it doesn’t drag on to the next month where I’ll be buried by even more things to read. Speaking of which what is coming out next or rather, this month anyway? I feel that I’ve already seen all of the vns of interest released this year. Namely Madou Koukaku and Madou Koukaku and Madou Koukaku and…
Okay maybe I don’t pay enough attention to new game announcements after all.
