Note that I only went through Kuu’s route, don’t really have interest in going through others as I had initially expected it to be a linear story with HAREM END. It was disappointing when it turned out that there was going to be half assed individual routes instead ;_;
You can’t exactly say that the story was thick with PLOT or anything amazing like that. There was also quite a large amount of ero but I think they nailed it in terms of pacing.
The story is more or less the sort of “the protagonist gets thrown into an unfamiliar environment and grows accustomed to it” sort of setting. The story is straightforward and things comfortably develop towards the finale.
Some of the twists were pretty dumb but the characters, pacing and world generally made up for it. It was pretty nice to see how my impressions of each character changed as new things were revealed about them.
Meanwhile the ending on the other hand was great. Great but not perfect as there’s still some points that I didn’t particularly like. On the negative side, the last last boss that appeared out of nowhere (or rather, she was a sub character that had a grand total of one scene at the first chapter) appeared, caused trouble and then went out with a whimper as she literally got defeated in some… 5 lines by Kuu.
Considering all the hype that built up around her, she really got defeated far too easily. Heck I don’t think she even had a chance to say some final dying words. She more or less got stomped and then well, nothing more to see guys go home.
Meanwhile on the positive side… the build up for the confrontation with Esto’s older sister Alma finally paid off.
Though I found it pretty cheap to write things off as “Alma was actually manipulated all this time!” it was still a good finish to her side of the story. Speaking of which, when thinking of it, it makes sense that Alma was manipulated since the plan she came up with was… pretty crazy. Who the heck would come up with a plan to turn all of the men of the country into shotas with her main goal being to turn Esto back into a shota so that of course, she can be with the perfectly pure and innocent Esto.
I feel that an antagonist which is a shotacon, brocon, dictator and feminist all at the same time is pretty rare really.
However if that wasn’t enough, the way Esto settled matters with Kuu was also pretty amazing.
While Kuu’s finale was pretty damn nice mostly because of Esto’s resolution, I did hold one doubt about it. Or rather, I held it for the entire damned story.
Okay, it was obvious from the start that Kuu intended to manipulate Esto into wishing for something that is obviously negative for humanity. We find out that it’s so that the monsters like Kuu can eat humans and survive. They are forbidden by god to do so and Kuu wants to change that as Kuu is the last surviving dragon because of that. This motive makes sense.
What doesn’t make any sense is why no one came up with the conception of just wishing for monsters to be able to survive on normal food until the very end. Like, it doesn’t even seem like it would have made much of a difference anyway. Well at least they did come up with it in the end but I still feel that if it were mentioned earlier a lot of the drama could’ve been avoided.
On that topic, doing that appeared to come with side effects. Namely that they can now become pregnant. Great news for Esto alright. Kuu also lightly mentioned that all of the monsters are women, so… Esto’s world is a world of… MONSTER GIRLS? Amazing world he lives in alright.
Overall it was a satisfactory story and I have no real problem with it. The quality was also pretty constant so there wasn’t any time where I was bored of reading it. Well, perhaps when the hscenes were playing. There was a lot of them…
Next up I’ll be playing 3rdeyes new game 幻創のイデア～Oratorio Phantasm Historia～. Their previous games haven’t been particularly good. Especially Testament where the absolute best girl got shafted, god dammit writers what are you doing?
However it honestly feels like its been a long while since my last chuuni game so what the hell. The reviews it has been getting is pretty decent as well. If all else fails I still have Totono and the likes to entertain myself so there’s not much to worry about.
