カルマルカ*サークル – Thoughts

Koyomi gets bonus points for being the cutest heroine. Though Natsuki is quite cute as well.

Koyomi gets bonus points for being the cutest heroine. Though Natsuki is quite cute as well.

That didn’t disappoint and I’m happy.

Let’s see…

Things were more or less exactly what I had predicted in the impressions. The setting was placed into the background while heroine problems and such were placed to the front. As you go through the routes, you can gradually pick up the idea of what the story is going for.

With every route, you learn the motivations, wishes, and sins that all of them have committed as well as foreshadowing for what sort of powers are around behind the scenes.

Natsuki’s route was a flat out disappointment. In terms of romance it was satisfactorily done but when it came to drama, it could only be explained as nothing less than abrupt and completely unnecessary to the story.

However I believe that it can be more or less forgiven when you think that Natsuki is the “true” heroine and that frankly, things weren’t even meant to end in such a fashion. The drama really felt like some last minute patchwork so that there is some sort of conflict in her route.

The other heroines had routes of varying quality. For an example, Shin’s route wasn’t particularly interesting as it was the same old story of family drama, misunderstandings and so on. That sort of stuff has been played out too many times really.

Then you had some routes with some pretty interesting revelations and drama involved. Nicole’s route gets the spot for the most unexpected twist with the entire war and life and death crisis getting involved in a story that was otherwise peaceful up to that point.

Meanwhile it felt like Koyomi’s route had the best drama (though this may partially be biased as she was cute which would have been enough to justify anything else) as it felt pretty well executed compared to the rest.

All of this is overshadowed by the true route however.

The true route took all of the build up and plot threads and tied it together into a great route that finally solves all of the mysteries surrounding the story.

The mystery bits were quite irritating as you just knew that something was there but for some reason all of the key characters who knew bits and pieces of the truth were dead on doing everything but explaining the situation to the characters.

Turning into the situation into a retarded “I won’t tell you any specifics but don’t do it” with no one satisfied with such a warning for obvious reasons.

Heroine route problems were also gradually solved (of course through the efforts of Kaito) and in the case of Shin’s problem, it actually tied into the big picture which was a nice touch.

We learn of Kaito’s past and why he became that way as well as how he changed after the start of the story and finally the true identity of Karumaruka is revealed as well. Simplifying things, once upon a time people discovered a way to access the Akashic records and obtained the ability to freely rewrite both the past and the future.

This led to many bloody conflicts and eventually it was decided for it to be protected from people who want to misuse it. Unfortunately things just don’t go well when big power is involved which is what produces the situation in the story. Where someone is attempting to manipulate these students into opening the records for his own greed.

Well there’s some more details involved here but we’ll overlook them, overall it was quite satisfying to find out the truth after all that teasing.

In the end they decide that they shouldn’t rely on such a power and end up sealing it up for good despite how all of them carry their own wishes they want granted and pasts they want to change. The finale was quite touching really. Though…

This.... was sort of out of place in the climax

This…. was sort of out of place in the climax (but I won’t complain)

All of the characters move on from their regrets and the story comes to a happy conclusion. I have to admit that Natsuki’s confession scene in the true route was a hundred times cuter than her own route.

I’m quite satisfied with how things played out and it goes to show that Saga Planets can make a good story even if it’s not another Hatsuyuki. If I had to compare the two however, I would say that this doesn’t lose to Hatsuyuki by much. The build up to the true route is admittedly a bit more boring though since the quality tended to fluctuate in between.

HAPPY END!

Next up I’ll be playing ひめごとユニオン which I hope to be decently enjoyable when considering how their previous game was like. Baldr Sky Zero is looking to be uncertain as its been proven that my computer can’t run it without some graphical issues appearing on the screen.

Depending on how I feel and how the reviews of it turns out as, I may read it for the sole reason of focusing on the story but it would honestly feel a bit disappointing as gameplay plays a large role in the Baldr series. I should really get a new computer…
